Engineers and safety professionals rely on measurements of various flammability properties of chemicals to set limits on process temperatures, pressures and concentrations to prevent fires and explosions. A variety of information is available in the literature on the flammability of many chemicals. However, users of this information must be cognizant of the limitations of the available data before applying it to their own situations. Proper understanding of how real-world conditions could affect flammability properties allows prudent decisions to be made on the safety margins to use when applying the flammability data obtained under tightly controlled laboratory conditions to real-world process. One of these real-world situations is the catalysts that can affect the autoignition temperature of some chemicals.
